Describing and predicting from a picture
By Michael Ukwuma
Tasks 3, 4 and 8 depend on seeing details quickly and naming them well.
Describe in a clear order
For a scene, move from the big picture to the details. Start with where the scene is and who is there. Then describe actions, clothing and objects. Use position words such as on the left, in the background and next to.
Predictions
For the prediction task, use will, might and probably. For example: The woman will probably ask for help, and the man might carry the boxes upstairs. Give a reason when you can.
Unusual situations
When a picture shows something strange, state what is unusual, guess why it happened, and say how people might react. Stay calm and treat it like any other description.
Key points
- Move from the whole scene to the details.
- Use will, might and probably for predictions.
- Name what is unusual, then give a reason.
