Listening to discussions and viewpoints
By Michael Ukwuma
How to follow several voices, understand opinions and answer questions on attitude.
Assign each voice a label
When two or three people speak, give each one a quick label in your notes, such as M for the man and W for the woman, or the first name if it is given. Then write one short note beside the label each time that person makes a point.
Listen for reasons
In a viewpoint recording, the opinion is only half of the answer. Questions often ask for the reason behind it. Whenever you hear because, since or the problem is, note what follows.
Common ground
Many discussions end with a compromise. Listen to the last third of the audio carefully. The final plan or the point where speakers agree is a favourite question.
Key points
- Label voices in your notes.
- Capture reasons as well as opinions.
- Listen closely to the ending.
