Note taking that actually helps
By Michael Ukwuma
What to write, what to ignore, and how to keep up when the speaker moves quickly.
Write less, not more
You cannot write full sentences while listening. Use short words, numbers and simple symbols. Write the key word only, for example Thu pm, 40 dollars, no nuts, before 5.
What to capture
Capture numbers, days, times, names, reasons and decisions. These are the things questions are built on. You do not need to note greetings or filler talk.
Use the question preview
If you see the questions before the audio, read them first. You will then know which details to catch. Even when you cannot see the questions, the first few seconds of a recording usually tell you the setting and the topic.
Do not chase one missed detail
If you miss something, let it go at once. Chasing it will make you miss the next two details. Use the answer options to guess intelligently after the audio ends.
Key points
- Use short words and numbers.
- Capture times, numbers, reasons and decisions.
- Let a missed detail go and keep listening.
