Part 4: tracking who thinks what

By Michael Ukwuma

The hardest reading part. Use a viewpoint tracker so you never mix up opinions.

Part 4 gives you a persuasive article with two or more opinions on a community issue, then a reader's comment with blanks. It is the hardest part for a reason. The questions test whether you can keep opinions straight.

Build a viewpoint tracker

As you skim, make three columns on your paper: Person, Position, Reason. Every time a new voice appears, add a line.

Example tracker

Mayor Lin | supports the bike lanes | safer for children

Shop owner Patel | against | loses parking for customers

Councillor Ross | supports with changes | wants a trial period first

Now when a question asks what the shop owner believes, you look at one line, not the whole article.
