The eight speaking tasks at a glance
By Michael Ukwuma
A short description of each task so nothing surprises you.
Tasks 1 to 4
Task 1 is giving advice to someone. Task 2 is talking about a personal experience. Task 3 is describing a scene from a picture. Task 4 is making predictions about what will happen next in the same picture.
Tasks 5 to 8
Task 5 is comparing two options and persuading someone to choose one. Task 6 is dealing with a difficult situation, such as explaining a problem politely. Task 7 is expressing an opinion. Task 8 is describing an unusual situation, often with a picture of something you might not expect.
Time is short
You get a short preparation time and then a speaking time of about one to one and a half minutes. Use your preparation time to choose two or three ideas, not to write sentences. Speak in an even and clear voice.
Practise out loud
Speaking improves only when you speak. Use the speaking practice section on this site, record yourself and listen back. You will notice pauses, repeated words and unclear endings that you cannot hear while you speak.
Key points
- Know the purpose of each of the eight tasks.
- Use preparation time to pick ideas, not to write.
- Record yourself and listen back.
