The six listening parts and what to expect
By Michael Ukwuma
From problem solving to viewpoints: what each part sounds like and how to listen.
Parts 1 and 2
Part 1 is problem solving. You hear a conversation where someone has a problem and a solution is discussed. Part 2 is a daily life conversation, such as joining a library or asking about a gym. In both, listen for the problem, the choices and the final decision.
Parts 3 and 4
Part 3 is information, such as a recorded message or a talk. Part 4 is a news item. Here the speaker gives facts in a clear order. Listen for numbers, dates, places and reasons, and for words that show sequence such as first, next and finally.
Parts 5 and 6
Part 5 is a discussion between several people and Part 6 is a set of viewpoints. You need to follow who says what and where speakers agree or disagree. Keep a mental label for each voice.
The audio plays once
In the real test you hear the recording only one time. On this site you can switch replay on while you learn, but as you improve, practise with replay off so that your ear gets used to the real conditions.
Key points
