Useful structures and linking words
By Michael Ukwuma
Phrases you can use again and again to make your writing smooth.
Opening an email
Try: I am writing to ask about, I am writing because, or I would like to inform you that. These lines tell the reader your purpose right away, which is exactly what a good email does.
Giving reasons and examples
Use because, since, as a result, for this reason and for example. Do not use the same linking word three times. Variety shows control.
Making requests
Try: I would be grateful if you could, Could you please, or I would appreciate it if. These sound polite without sounding weak.
Closing
Try: Thank you for your time and I look forward to your reply, or Please let me know if you need any further information. End with a name that suits the task, such as your first name.
A caution
Do not memorise a whole template and force it into every answer. Use these phrases as tools, and always make sure your sentences answer the actual prompt.
Key points
- State your purpose in the first sentence.
- Vary your linking words.
- Use polite request phrases.
