What CELPIP score do you need for CLB 7?

By Michael Ukwuma

CLB 7 means a CELPIP score of 7 in every skill. It is the minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and for many other pathways. Here is what it takes.

To reach CLB 7 you need a CELPIP score of at least 7 in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. CELPIP General levels match CLB levels one to one, so the number on your score report is your CLB level in that skill.

CLB 7 is the line many programs draw. It is the minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and for Canadian Experience Class jobs in TEER 0 and 1, and it is the level many post graduation work permit applicants now need.

Put your four CELPIP scores, or the scores you are aiming for, into the converter below. It shows your CLB level in each skill and the Express Entry language points they earn.

What CLB 7 is worth in Express Entry

Each skill at CLB 7 earns 17 core language points, or 16 with a spouse or partner. That is a solid base, but CLB 8 earns 23 per skill and CLB 9 earns 31. If you are already near 7, aim higher: every level above 7 adds real points.

Please note. Meeting the minimum is rarely enough to receive an invitation. Treat CLB 7 as the floor, not the finish line.

What CLB 7 looks like on IELTS

On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 means 6.0 in each of the four skills, according to the IRCC language test equivalency charts.
