What CELPIP score do you need for CLB 9?

By Michael Ukwuma

CLB 9 means a CELPIP score of 9 in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Here is why it matters so much for Express Entry and how to close the gap.

The short answer: you need a 9 in each of the four CELPIP skills. For CELPIP General, your level in each skill is the same number on the Canadian Language Benchmark. A 9 in Reading is CLB 9 in Reading, and so on.

The important word is each. Immigration looks at the four skills separately, so an 11 in Listening does not make up for an 8 in Writing. Your lowest skill decides whether you have CLB 9.

Put your four CELPIP scores, or the scores you are aiming for, into the converter below. It shows your CLB level in each skill and the Express Entry language points they earn.

Why CLB 9 is worth chasing

In Express Entry, every skill at CLB 9 earns 31 core language points, or 29 if your spouse or partner comes with you. At CLB 8 the same skill earns 23. Moving all four skills from 8 to 9 adds 32 points before anything else changes.

CLB 9 in all four skills also unlocks the highest skill transferability points when you combine it with your education or foreign work experience. For many candidates, that is the biggest score jump they can still control.

My advice. If one skill sits at 8 and the other three are at 9 or above, put almost all of your practice time into that one skill. It is the fastest way to raise your score.

What CLB 9 looks like on other tests

If you are comparing with IELTS General Training, CLB 9 means 7.0 in Reading, 7.0 in Writing, 8.0 in Listening and 7.0 in Speaking. Notice how high the IELTS Listening bar is. That is one reason many candidates find CLB 9 easier to reach with CELPIP.

These equivalents come from the official IRCC language test equivalency charts.
