What score do you need? CLB 7, CLB 9 and why it matters

By Michael Ukwuma

How CELPIP levels match CLB levels, what different immigration programs ask for, and why CLB 9 is worth the extra push.

Before you plan, know your target. Too many people aim for 'a good score'. That is not a target. A number is a target.

CELPIP levels and CLB

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada treats a CELPIP level as the same CLB level from 4 to 9. So CELPIP 7 in Reading counts as CLB 7 in Reading. Levels 10, 11 and 12 all count as CLB 10.

Your score report also shows an average, but immigration does not use it. Each skill is judged on its own.

Common targets

Rules change, so always confirm on the official IRCC website before you book your test.

Why CLB 9 changes the game

In Express Entry, a single applicant earns 17 points per skill at CLB 7 and 31 points per skill at CLB 9. Across four skills that is a big jump. On top of that, the extra points for combining language with education or foreign work experience grow when all four skills reach CLB 9.

Paragon itself calls CLB 9 a sweet spot. Raising even one skill by one level can matter.

How many correct answers is that?

Paragon publishes rough conversion charts. They overlap because test forms differ, so treat them as a guide only.

Look closely. The gap between CLB 7 and CLB 9 is only five or six extra correct answers per skill. That is exactly the kind of gap good strategy closes.
