Getting Ready for Your First Canadian Winter on the Road

A. Many newcomers are surprised that winter tires are not the same as all season tires. Winter tires use a softer rubber that stays flexible below 7 degrees Celsius, and their deep tread grips snow and slush. In Quebec, they are required by law from December 1 to March 15. In British Columbia, they are required on many highways from October to April. Other provinces do not require them, but some insurance companies offer a small discount to drivers who use them.

B. An emergency kit can turn a frightening situation into an uncomfortable one. Experts suggest keeping a blanket, a small shovel, a bag of sand or kitty litter for traction, a flashlight, water and snacks in the trunk. A phone charger that works from the car is also useful, since cold weather drains batteries quickly.

C. Driving habits matter as much as equipment. Stopping distances on ice can be up to ten times longer than on dry pavement. Driving instructors advise leaving at least twice the normal space behind the vehicle ahead, braking gently, and avoiding sudden turns. On cold mornings, drivers should clear all snow from the roof, not just the windshield, because snow can fly off and blind the driver behind.

D. Finally, plan before you go. Provincial road reports show closures and conditions in real time. If a storm is forecast, many employers now allow staff to work from home, and schools sometimes close. Staying off the road during the worst hours is often the safest choice of all.
